Who builds this, and why

A studio in Lebanon, one app, and an argument about where the wall in a shop belongs.

Who builds this

Inner Circle is built and maintained by Monochrome, a studio in Lebanon. The people who write the app also write the guides on this site and answer the contact form, which is the whole reason a reply here reads like a person rather than a queue.

You will not find a founder's photograph on this page. The argument below is either right or it is not, and whose name is on it does not change that; what should persuade you is the reasoning, the changelog, and the legal documents setting out what happens to your data and what we owe you when something goes wrong. The app went live on the Shopify App Store on 10 August 2026, and we answer the contact form ourselves.

Why Inner Circle exists

Shopify gives you two settings, and there is a gap between them.

A storefront is either open to everybody, or it is behind the password page. The password page works. It just hides the shop from search as completely as it hides it from strangers, because a crawler is an anonymous visitor and always will be. Whatever you show someone who has never heard of you is the entirety of what search knows about your store.

For a store that is genuinely private, that trade is fine. For a store that needs to be found and needs buying to be conditional (a trade catalogue, a members' range, a drop with a date on it) both settings are wrong, and most people end up choosing which problem they would rather have.

The interesting position is neither. Leave browsing open and move the wall from the front door to the till. Products, collections and photography stay public, indexed and shareable; the price and the buy button are what sit behind the door. A stranger can look at everything, want it, and find out they cannot have it yet, and that moment is something you can actually do something with.

That argument is worked through properly in a members-only store Google can still find, and the honest case for the built-in option is in the password page guide. Both were written before the app had customers, and neither has been edited since to make the product look better.

What follows from it

Four decisions come straight out of that position, and they are the ones worth judging the app on:

  • The price is hidden before the page paints. A gate that flashes the real price for a frame has not hidden it.
  • The gate is decided on the server. Who holds access is not a value in the page, so editing the page in a browser cannot grant it. Shopify checks the same answer again at the checkout, so a locked product cannot be bought by way of a direct cart link — for most kinds of lock, and not all: see what we do not claim.
  • It fails open. If our service is down, your storefront keeps selling. An outage of ours should never blank your shop.
  • Data sits in the EU. Frankfurt, encrypted at rest, and deleted when you uninstall.

The third one is a genuine trade and worth stating as such: failing open means a long enough outage briefly makes a locked store a normal one. The alternative is a gate that takes your shop down with it, and between the two, the shop staying up is the one we would want as merchants.

What we do not claim

Inner Circle is a merchandising control, not security. It is not a vault, it does not encrypt your catalogue, and it is not a substitute for the checks Shopify already runs on an order. Anything published on a public page is public.

Specifically, the gate reaches Shopify's checkout from some locks and not others. A lock that names its products, or covers your whole store, is enforced at the cart: a visitor without access cannot buy, direct cart link or not. A lock pointed at a collection, or at conditions like a tag or a vendor, still governs the storefront and stops there. Nor does any of it hold if our check fails — Shopify completes the sale rather than hold up your customer, which is the same choice we make on the storefront and for the same reason. Where a product must be impossible to buy under every one of those conditions, unpublish it or take it off the sales channel. That is Shopify's job, it does it properly, and we would rather say so than let you find out.

We are not affiliated with Shopify Inc., and where this site quotes a price the App Store listing (opens in a new tab) is the version that governs.

Questions about whether this fits your store are the ones worth sending. Use the contact form or write to hello@monochrome.digital. If the answer is that Inner Circle is the wrong tool for what you are doing, that is the answer you will get.

Ready to put a door on it?

Inner Circle installs from the Shopify App Store in a couple of minutes, and nothing on your storefront changes until you turn the app embed on.
